Workshops

Great Songs of the New Folk Movement: This is for songwriters and non-songwriters alike. We play 5 or 6 songs by different artists and discuss them as works of art, point out unique ways the writers used the form to convey subtle meanings. Songs include Annie Gallup's "100 Miles From Music City" and Dave Carter's "When I Go." Participants engage in the discussion.

Songwriting Workshop: Done best in a series of four week classes, but also can be a one workshop experience. Songs are presented and analyzed, basic musical composition ideas are discussed, and writing exercises offered to trigger creativity. Participants share the songs for feedback in a supportive atmosphere.

Scottish Ballads: A discussion and performance of Scottish Ballads, with tales of romance and betrayal, feuds and wars, comedy and myth - the wisdom - and prejudice - of the race. I explain how the process of oral tradition shaped them, and present examples of stories which convey compelling psychological truths. I compare their preponderance of kings and queens, lords and ladies, to today's preoccupation with celebrity.  I have translated the ballads I present from Scots dialect into contemporary English.
