The Fox

Traditional, arranged by Andrew Calhoun, recorded on Grapevine

The fox went out on a chilly night
Prayed to the moon for to give him light
For he'd many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town - O
town o, town o
He'd many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town

He ran till he came to a farmer's pen
The ducks and the geese were kept therein.
He said, "A couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o."
He said, "A couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town."

He grabbed a grey goose by the neck,
Swung a duck across his back.
He didn't mind the quack, quack, quack
And the legs all danglin' down-o, down-o, down-o.
He didn't mind the quack, quack, quack
And her legs all danglin' down.

Old mother tipped up in the bed,
Out of the window she cocked her head.
Yellin, "John, John, the grey goose is gone
And the fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o."
"John, hey John, the grey goose is gone
And the fox is on the town."

John he run to the top of the hill,
Blew his horn both loud and shrill.
Fox said, "I better flee with my kill
For he'll soon be on my trail-o, trail-o, trail-o.
Fox said, "Hee! I better flee with my kill
For he'll soon be on my trail."

He ran right up to his cozy den.
There were the little ones 8, 9, and 10.
They said, "Daddy please go back again
For it must be a mighty fine town-o, town-o, town-o."
They said, "Daddy please go back again
For it must be a mighty fine town."

The fox and his wife without any strife
Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife.
They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o.
They never had such a supper in their life,
And the little ones chewed on the bones.
