James McCandless/ Julianne Macarus |

"Powerful, deeply moving, poignant, funny, marvelous." - Studs Terkel
"Intelligent folk music that defies easy classification." -Michael Parrish, Dirty Linen
Imagine you're browsing through an antique store. There's some junk there, and some flashy, expensive stuff. Then you run across a simple but beautifully designed and finished piece, made entirely by hand. That's what McCandless' songs are like. When asked about his influences, he is likely to mention the Dutch painter Peter Brueghel. |

Calamity James
| When Waterbug was a baby, James McCandless and Julianne Macarus made a recording called "Out West Somewhere." At that time there was a chain of 4 stores on the West Coast called HEAR Music; they featured independent artists with something to say, alongside the well-known major label singer-songwriters; their buyer, Tor Hansen, "got it;" they featured most of our early titles, sometimes selling as much out of their 4 stores as sold through traditional retail in the rest of the country. They... More>>> |

Splash of Red
|
James McCandless
and Julianne Macarus
(St. Christopher)
Splash of Red is a departure
from earlier recordings, concentrating
more on guitar arrangements of traditional Irish tunes than songs.
But there are four new McCandless songs, two serious - "The Rock In
The Road" and "Splash of Red" - and two goofy, "Mother's Sweet
Revenge" and "18th Anniversary." The tunes - McCandless says he
aspires to play the way Gene Kelly dances - are "Blind Mary" (T.
Carolan),... More>>> |

Sea of Freedom
|
Sea of Freedom features the talents
of three of Chicago's great young
Irish musicians, Martin Hayes (fiddle), John Williams (accordion) and
Jackie Moran (percussion). "Springfield" and "Memorial Day" leaf
through the pages of a treasured family history; "Cherokee Bill" and
"Red Bandanna" recapture the days of the first Irish immigrants;
"Michelangelo" shares a precious secret, and the story ends with the
title track, a love song which is one of McCandless' yearly gifts to... More>>> |

Out West Somewhere
|
Much of Out West Somewhere
is a recreation in song of the romance and
treachery of the Old West. Titles include "Tom Horn," "Lowdown Yankee
Liar," and "The Black Rose." "It May Go On Without Me" and "The
Drunken Brawl" are comic songs with a more contemporary feel, and
"One Rock" is something like a Gary Snyder nature poem set to music.
Julianne Macarus contributes inspired vocal, violin and viola
accompaniments.
