White Horses

White Horses finds Pint and
Dale returning to the world of the sea and her many faces. Traditional sea shanties
highlight Pint and Dale’s distinctive arrangements and musical style from the
a capella “Bring ’em Down,” and “Across the Western Ocean” to rockin’ versions
of “One More Day,” “Leave Her Johnny,” and the French whaling shanty “Pique
la Baleine.” “Davy Lowston” and “Johnny Todd” feature the lush sound of Nancy
Wharton’s cello blending with Felicia Dale’s haunting hurdy-gurdy. “Cape Cod
Girls” pairs lyrics of a traditional sea shanty with an original melody by William
Pint, and “Jack, The Jolly Tar” is a new setting of a familiar traditional theme.
Three contemporary pieces are Janie Meneely’s humorous “Twiddles,” Brian Leo’s
downright silly song “The Sea” and the title song, “White Horses are Calling
Me,” written by British songwriter Brian Bedford (of Artisan). Instrumental
tunes feature “An Dro,” an exhilarating Breton dance on the hurdy-gurdy and
a lovely whistle arrangement of the Irish tune “Metal Man,” and mandolin and
whistle duets on the hornpipes, “Humors of Ballyconnell” and “Tom of the Mountains.”
